The Meaning of an Anchor on a Headstone

An anchor on a headstone can have either of two meanings. It can represent steadfastness in faith or the grave of a seafarer.

Sometimes it is obvious if the deceased is named as a captain and also gives the name of his ship. The anchors on mariners graves can also look like they have been lost at sea, fouled on rocks with a broken chain.

Those anchors seen away from the coast are probably connected with faith, but there is the old yarn that when a sailor retires, he sets off inland with an anchor across his shoulders. When he meets some one who asks ‘what’s that you’re carrying?’ he knows he’s travels far enough from the sea and can settle down.

The anchor image shown above features a heart and a cross, which means the deceased was devoted to their faith. The flowers look like primroses and in Victorian symbology, represented youth. In Hebrews 6 God promises eternal life to those with Faith and Endurance

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Hebrews 6:19

A rare symbol and one that we have yet to come across is a cross and anchor combined in one symbol. It looks just like a crucifix, but the bottom part showcases the anchor and it is actually a cross in disguise.  Centuries ago when Christians were persecuted for practicing their religion, this symbol was used to tell others the religion they practiced without getting caught.
